Brian is the son of Homer “Junior” Guthrie, a professional baseball player in the 1950s who was managed by former KC Coach, Chuck Hawley during his professional career.  Brian grew up with baseball in his blood.  Brian was a member of the Carlyle Grade School State Championship team in 1976, pitched a 5-0 shutout vs DuQuoin in state semi-final game.  Brian also played Carlyle American Legion Baseball from 1978-81 and played Clinton County League Baseball for 10 years. Brian was also an accomplished athlete at Carlyle High School before attending KC and holds eight varsity letters, 4 in baseball, 3 in basketball and 1 in golf.  Brian was a member of the 1981 Class A State Championship Baseball team and was named All State Tournament Shortstop.  Brian was also a four year varsity baseball starter, three time Southwest Egyptian Conference All Conference Selection, a 1981 St. Louis Post Dispatch Scholar Athlete and a 1981 Walter Koehler Award Winner while at Carlyle High School.  Brian was also a member of the National Honor Society. 

While at KC, Brian completed 18 games of 23 games started; his record 14-9, 157 innings pitched, 81 SO, 64 BB, Batting avg .264, ERA 3.10, and 1 Save.  He was the 1981-82 SICC All Conference Team (Pitcher) with a 3-1 record and ERA 2.13. Brian eceived the KC Award for Lowest ERA and was the 1982-83 KC Male Athlete of the Year.  Brian was a member of the 1982-83 Men’s Basketball team receiving the Free Throw Award, Morris Award and was Conference Player of the Week in January 1983.  Brian graduated from KC. 

After KC, Brian attended SEMO where he also played on the baseball team.  In 1984 his record was 3-1, ERA 5.4, SO 17, 11 BB.  In 1985, Brian completed 7 games of 8 games started (Individual Season Leader (ISL) for complete games).  His stats include 54 innings pitched, 39 SO, 23 BB with a 6-2 record and 2.52 ERA (ISL for ERA); his career record was 9-3.  Brian tied for ISL for Shutouts in 1985 with Joe Schulte.  He was the 1985 All Conference 1st Team Pitcher witha  6-2 record and 3.52 ERA (led conference).  Brian was also 1985 All Midwest 2nd Team, Division II.  He holds an overall 9-3 record at SEMO, pitched two shutouts his senior year vs St. Louis University and Marietta College.  Brian pitched a complete game victory at Memphis State University, a #12 nationally ranked Division I school. 

Brian's overall career college pitching record (SEMO and KC) is 23-12.  Brian was a volunteer pitching coach in 1985-86 at SEMO.  He served as a baseball instructor at KC baseball camps in the 1980-90s and was the Patoka High School Baseball Coach from 1994-2000.  As a coach, Brian's career record is154-74 garnering 4 regular season Egyption-Illini Conference Championships and 6 conference tournament championships.  His 1994 Championship was the first for Patoka since 1967. 

Brian was also a volunteer coach at Central High School in 1993 and he coached youth teams in Carlyle.  Brian was an integral member of the 1981-82 Blue Devils Baseball team inducted into the Kaskaskia College Hall Of Fame in 2013.  The team was the last to claim a SICC Title with a 12-4 record.  The team’s nonconference record was 12-6, with a 45-24 for the year; they won 16 home games in a row and finished second in the Sectional Tournament.

Brian is lifelong resident of Carlyle and a lifelong educator, serving from 1993-04 as teacher, coach, athletic director and principal at Patoka.  From 2004-06, Brian was principal at Centralia City Elementary and from 2006-15 served as Assistant Regional Superintendent for ROE 13.  Brian is currently the Administrator for Sandoval School District’s “School Climate Transformation Grant.”  A dedicated member of the community, Brian was twice elected to Clinton County Board and is a former Commander of Sons of American Legion, Post 404 in Carlyle.  Brian is married to Cathy Seiffers and has four sons, Tyler, Josh, Andrew and Matthew.  A versatile sportsman, Brian has also bowled multiple 300 games and one 800 series and scored a hole-in-one on Hole #1 at the Centralia Meadow Woods Country Club.
