VU baseball picks up two wins over the weekend

The Vincennes University baseball team hit the road this weekend to take on Kaskaskia College in Centralia, Ill Friday and Ivy Tech-Northwest in Fort Wayne Saturday for a pair of double-header matchups.

The Trailblazers came away with the four-game split, winning one game over the Kaskaskia and one over Ivy Tech.

VU got the weekend started at Kaskaskia and the Blue Devils jumped out early, building a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

Vincennes would get on the scoreboard in the fifth, plating a run, before Kaskaskia answered back making it a 4-1 game.

The Trailblazes would tack on another run in the sixth but were unable to take the lead late as Kaskaskia took game one 4-2.

Game two Friday was a much different story as the Trailblazers exploded for three runs in the second and five in the third to take a commanding 8-0 early lead.

Kaskaskia would only manage to score one run in the fourth and VU shut the door on a possible comeback with two runs in the sixth to take the 10-1 road win.

Cooper Thacker came away with the complete game win on the mound, giving up one run on four hits and striking out five.

VU then looked to keep their hot bats going Saturday at Ivy Tech-Northeast and took a 2-0 lead in the third.

Ivy Tech would even the score with two runs in the bottom of the third and take the lead with a run in the fourth and add two more runs in the fifth.

Vincennes tried to mount a comeback in the seventh but came up just short after scoring two runs, dropping game three of the weekend 5-4.

The Blazers wanted to finish out the weekend on a high-note in the final game of the Saturday doubleheader but it was Ivy Tech-Northeast who took the early lead in the second.

Vincennes responded with three runs in the third to take the lead and added a run in the fourth.

Ivy Tech evened the score at four-all in the fifth, scoring three runs. VU would score two in the sixth and Ivy Tech was only able to get one run back as Vincennes came away with the 6-5 win to finish the weekend at 2-2.

Braedon Nichols picked up the win on the mound for VU Saturday, pitching five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out six batters.

Parker Watts finished off the game, picking up the six-out save, giving up one run on one hit and punching out one.

The Trailblazers now turn their attention back to MWAC conference play this weekend as VU hosts Heartland College at Jerry Blemker Field Friday, April 16 before the series shifts to Normal, Ill. for the final two games of the four-game set Sunday, April 18. First pitch both days is set for 2 p.m. eastern.
