Blue Devils make big strides at Heartland Invite

Andrew Latham finished in top 20.

With only four days of recovery after a grueling race this past Saturday, the Blue Devils were back racing. The Hearltand Invite, is unique in that its a pure JUCO or community college race. The 8K distance is mostly grass traveling through Maxwell Park in Normal, IL. The meet featured some of the best JUCO cross country programs in Illinois, with the always highly ranked Mineral Area College of Missouri joining the mix. Harper the number 2 team in D3 won the meet, followed Heartland and then Sauk Valley, both teams have received votes nationally. The fourth place team was Joliet College, the third rank team in D3. The Blue Devils finished in 5th out of 8 full teams. Andrew Latham lead the way with a career best time of 28:58, he was followed by Branson Pappas with a time of 30:03 (PR) and then Jonathan Holthaus 30:42. Jack Walters was next for KC and then Daniel Obernuefemann. Jack and Daniel put together a good solid race. Jack Shelton and Owen Huelsmann were the 6th and 7th Blue Devil to finish. Andrew, Branson, and Jonathan were agressive on the course and battled to pick up spots. Our 2-5 were close together, just need to move the pack up. Andrew was running on some very sore feet and showed a lot of courage and toughness. This was our first chance to race in decent weather on a runners friendly course.
