IVY SMART SIGNS WITH KASKASKIA SOFTBALL

MARION, IL -- Ivy Smart has recently signed an NJCAA Letter of Intent to continue her education and softball career at Kaskaskia College.  This multi-sport (volleyball) standout will bring an athletic, 5'10" frame, into the Blue Angels' pitching circle and has the talent to play several other positions on the field.  She possesses a powerful, middle-of-the-order bat, with the ability to hit for high average. Academically, she is an honor student, who plans to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine.  Ivy is the daughter of Steve and Sara Ewing of Pittsburg, Illinois.

While playing for Kaskaskia alum, Coach Joy Neal, at Marion High School, Ivy has helped lead the Wildcats to three South7 Conference championships, along with 68 wins. For her efforts, Ivy has been recognized as an All Conference player.  Last season, she received the honor of participating in the Southern Illinois Select All Star game.  Ivy also plays travel ball for the well-known, Downstate Rippers. At MHS, the honors student is involved with the Unified Partners (mentor for special needs individuals) and the American Sign Language Club.

Kaskaskia's coach, John Barnes, has stated that he is very excited for the new addition. "After stepping in late last spring and experiencing the level of competition in our conference, I knew exactly what type of pitcher(s) we needed to help lead us towards improving our program.  Ivy is definitely that type of pitcher, and will join 4 other in-coming hurlers to help bolster the returning staff next season.  Ivy has the velocity and a repertoire of spins to be successful at this level and time will tell if she can adjust to the D-I talent.  But just as important, the girl can hit, which will put her in the line-up regardless if she is pitching.  Right now, I envision her to play first base, but her versatility makes her an option at other spots too.  After doing my research and getting to know her, I am most impressed with her character.  She is a great student and an even better person, who her teammates and the campus will love. Without a doubt, I know we just got a good one."
